KARMAPA KHYENNO
"Embodiment of the compassion of all Buddhas, take
heed of me."
(ONE BILLION KARMAPA KHYENNO MANTRAS)
Since 1983, the Dhungdrup Association has been holding the
100 million Mantra recitations every year at the Dharma
Chakra Centre, Rumtek, East Sikkim the main seat of His
Holiness the Karmapa.
In continuation of this practice, this year however, the
proposal is to take up the recitation of “Karmapa
Khyenno”, in support of the One Billion Karmapa Khyenno
Mantras presently in progress worldwide. The Dharma Chakra
Centre, Rumtek, is beginning a special drive in collectively
involving all the Karma Kagyu Monasteries in Sikkim and
the neighboring West Bengal for the recitation of the mantras
commencing from the 11th of June, 2006. A request will be
made to all these monasteries to continuously dedicate a
time span of one week for this purpose. This will see the
involvement of around 17 Monasteries in Sikkim participating
in the prayers divided into four districts for convenience
of logistics and management. The monasteries in the East
District of Sikkim will come under the fold of the main
Rumtek Monastery, while the Phodong Monastery will co-ordinate
and house all the participants from monasteries in the North
District of Sikkim. Likewise the Palchen Choeling Monastery
of His
Eminence Gyaltsabha Rinpoche will be the main centre
for Monasteries in the South District and the Tashiding
Monastery for the West District. In neighbouring West Bengal,
the Kagyu Monasteries of Kalu
Rinpoche in Sonada and Salugara, the Mirik Bokar Ngedon
Chokhorling Monastery, and Kagyu Theckchen Choeling Monastery
in Lava of His
Eminence Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche will also be participating
in the recitation of the Mantras. A special request will
also be made to Sherabling Monastery, the Seat of His
Eminence Tai Situ Rinpoche in Himachal Pradesh for their
involvement in this project.
The Rumtek Dharma Chakra Centre comprising the Sangha Body
as well as the students and staff members from the Sherda
and the lay community will take up the recitation of the
Mantras for one whole month. There will also be participation
of the local Buddhist community in Sikkim for this occasion
and necessary arrangements will be provided by H.H. the
Karmapa's Dhungdrub Association for meals and accommodations
by the Monastery. If you would like however, the accommodations
are provided by the Monastery, Tsurphu Labrang and Rumtek
Manilhakhang (Lay Prayer Hall) Committee. The month long
prayers in the Rumtek Monastery will also coincide with
the auspicious occasion of the 21st Birth Anniversary of
the Gyalwa
Karmapa on the 26th of June. This year also
marks the 2550th Birthday of Lord Buddha being celebrated
worldwide, and it is also the Anniversary of Terchen Chokgyur
Lingpa.
The Gyalwa Karmapa is the personification of the activities
of all past, present and future Buddhas of all the directions
and times. Karmapa embodies all Buddhas and therefore, is
the teacher of all bodhisattvas. "The recitation of
Karmapa Khyenno is the invocation of the blessing, and the
invocation of the compassion, and the invocation of all
the activities of the Buddha, in the name of the great master
who is the manifestation of the activities of all the Buddhas,
the Gyalwa Karmapa." – (H.E. Tai Situ Rinpoche)
All Karmapas are considered the continuity of one active
compassionate essence. As such, we can invoke him through
the mantra, Karmapa Khyenno.
Early in 2003, the The Billion Mantra Initiative (BMI) project
was conceived and initiated by a private individual - Vic
Gabriel, a student of KhenchenThrangu
Rinpoche, and supported by friends and other members
of the Simhanada, and Khandro.net.
to help smooth the way for Karmapa to assume his rightful
seat and also pave way for having the freedom to accomplish
his role as a religious Leader of this world without any
limitations or hindrances. The goal of the project is to
offer His Holiness Ogyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa
one billion (1, 000, 000, 000) mantras. Lamas, anis, monks,
lay members of various Kagyu centers, and individuals have
been chanting Karmapa mantra.
The Dharma Chakra Centre, Rumtek in support of this project
which has now crossed the halfway mark, would appreciate
any help and assistance for the early and successful completion
of the BMI project. Involvement of all the Monasteries mentioned
above will entail expenses towards daily meals and snacks
and travel. Hence any contribution made in this regard would
be sincerely appreciated. Please contact the persons below
